GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sucrose is a non-reducing crystalline disaccharide, composed of two monosaccharides: glucose and fructose. It is present in the roots, fruits, and nectars of many plants, but as ordinary sugar it is mainly extracted from sugar cane and sugar beets.

ADVANTAGES

Sucrose has unique chemical and physical properties, especially in aqueous solutions, that make it an excellent stabilizer for biopharmaceutical formulations.

The robustness of the formulation in biopharmaceuticals is based on using excipients for biopreservation against a wide variety of stresses, while facing two major challenges related to their limited chemical and physical stability. Sucrose is an efficient bioprotective agent against different kind of stresses and is used to stabilize proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates during the formulation process and freeze/thaw life cycle of therapeutics.

It is also widely applied as a cryopreservative and media supplement in a variety of cell-based bioprocesses. It is preferred to trehalose in applications where solubility and/or viscosity issues are paramount.

BENEFITS

The stabilizing benefits of Sucrose include but are not limited to:

  • monoclonal antibodies (mAbs),
  • media supplementation,
  • antibody drug conjugate (ADC) stabilization,
  • fusion proteins,
  • antibody fragments (fAbs),
  • peptides,
  • stem cells,
  • vaccines.
